Liverpool Held Scoreless in Three Consecutive PL Games
Aveek Chaudhuri, January 22, 2021
After Thursday's 1-0 loss to Burnley, Liverpool have now gone three consecutive Premier League games without a win or a goal. Since their 1-1 draw with West Brom on December 27, 2020, Liverpool have failed to score in any of their next three matches. They have suffered losses to Burnley and Southampton while ending the match with Manchester United at a 0-0 stalemate. This recent loss in form has seen Liverpool go down to fourth place, currently sitting with 34 points, 6 points off league leaders Manchester United. Mohamed Salah has been Liverpool's highest goalscorer in the Premier League so far with a league high 13 goals but has failed to lead Liverpool out of this slump in form. Thus, Manchester City and Leicester City have overtaken Liverpool into second and third respectively.
Although Mohamed Salah has been producing for Liverpool, the other two of Liverpool's famous front three have been less than impressive. Sadio Mane has had only 6 goals and 4 assists in 18 Premier League appearances this season. Meanwhile, Roberto Firmino has only scored 5 goals while having 3 assists in 19 league appearances. Two of Liverpool's stars are clearly not producing and that has been affecting them on the pitch, causing them to lose 9 points in three consecutive games. As a result of these struggles, Liverpool have already lost 3 games in 19 gameweeks, the same amount they lost in the entirety of the 2019/20 season when they were crowned champions.
Key bench players like Divock Origi have also not been of much help. Although Origi has totaled just 5 league appearances this season, he has had zero goals and zero assist, his most notable moment coming when he missed a clear one on one with Nick Pope in the loss against Burnley where he hit the right side post. Thus, Liverpool need a change of form in their attack fast before they lose even more points.
