Sweet Victory Escapes Manchester United After Late Everton Equalizer
Aveek Chaudhuri, February 6, 2021
A 6 goal thriller at Old Trafford saw Manchester United and Everton each settle for a point on their Saturday clash. Manchester United initially took a two goal lead courtesy of a Edinson Cavani header and a stunning strike by Bruno Fernandes. As a result, United led into the second half until Everton's Abdoulaye Doucouré and James Rodríguez each scored to level the game. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjær's favorite player, Scott McTominay, put the Red Devils back in the lead in the 70' minute. And as United thought they were going to take all 3 points, Everton had other ideas as Dominic Calvert-Lewin unbelievably leveled the score at the 95' minute. Thus, the game ended 3-3, with each team taking a point. This result sees Manchester United stay 2nd in the Premier League table and Everton at 6th.
Both teams had a solid match with chances created and of course, goals scored. Manchester United dominated in possession with 62% while Everton only had 38%. As a result, United attempted 14 shots with 5 on target while Everton only attempted 6 the entire game, with only 3 on target which all ended up in the back of David de Gea's net. Although the match statistics shows the teams to have been more or less even, Manchester United will certainly feel that they could have taken all 3 points, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær even saying after the match, "We shouldn't even be considered as title chasers!"
This match was a poor way to mark Solskjær's 100th Premier League match in charge of United. He was disappointed as well as the rest of the team. Many critics are now also calling for Solskjær to finally drop goalkeeper David de gea after another subpar performance, especially after his mistake which led to Everton's late equalizer. There are now calls coming from critics and fans to start Dean Henderson over de Gea. It remains to be seen what Solskjær does with his goalkeeping situation but it is vital that the goalkeeping is fixed at United or their title hopes will soon completely disappear. Everton and Carlo Ancelotti, however, are pleased with the result after a hard-fought comeback. Ancelotti was full of praise for his players after the match and hopefully, this sees a turn around in Everton's recent form as in their last five league matches, they only had 2 wins with 1 draw and 2 defeats. Ancelotti will certainly be looking to continue this form with upcoming matches against Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham, and Chelsea.
